Hi John, this method just worked for me. I received my friend's old MacBook, which he reset to factory settings (Mountain Lion 10.8.5). I needed to update to Sierra, but received the same message when I tried to download it from the App Store.
Use Wired Connection instead of Wi-Fi. When download repeatedly fails over one Wi-Fi network, restart your Mac, switch to a different Wi-Fi, and try again. If this too fails to download macOS Big Sur, consider using an Ethernet connection. For big updates, it's better to use a reliable wired internet connection over a wireless system.
